A message from Dr. Paula Mabee Chief Scientist and Observatory Director

Greetings,

It is my pleasure to announce Dr. Kate Thibault, NEON Science Lead, as the Acting Chief Scientist and Observatory Director beginning June 2. Dr. Thibault has provided exemplary leadership to NEON in many capacities for the last 10 years and will be a point of contact for the community during this interim period. Applications are being reviewed for the Chief Scientist and Observatory Director position; the job link remains accessible on the Battelle careers site.

I am also happy to announce another visualization tool available to the community, the Surface-Atmosphere Exchange (SAE) Data Viewer tool. The tool enables visualization of 10 data products, including sensible heat, latent heat, and carbon fluxes, CO2, CH4, and H2O concentrations and isotopic ratios of CO2 and H2O. Learn more about the SAE Data Viewer in the associated Data Notification.

May was the final month for the 2025-2026 NEON Science Seminar Series. We are now seeking speakers for the next seminar series! If you have a topic or research to share, or know someone that does, please consider submitting a nomination and sharing the opportunity with your network. While we accept nominations for future seminars on a rolling basis, submissions received before June 10 will receive the highest consideration for the Fall 2026-Spring 2027 series. If you missed any of the eight excellent seminars in the 2025-2026 series, the recordings are available on the Science Seminar web page.

NEON is also available to support proposals for the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology (PRFB). NEON can provide scientific expertise and mentorship from Observatory staff, the opportunity to be sponsored at Arizona State University with the NEON Biorepository, and Research Support Services to assist with research needs. Learn more about NEON support on the NEON PRFB event page.

As May ends, a reminder, in the coming month user accounts for the NEON Data Portal will become mandatory and NEON data products will transfer from a CC0 license to a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. More information about both changes is available in the associated Data Notification.

Wishing you all the best and looking forward to continuing to witness the excellent work throughout the NEON community.

Sincerely,

Paula Mabee, Chief Scientist and Observatory Director at NEON, Battelle

From instrument to insight, Kim Nitschke explains where data quality begins

Data quality at NEON starts with the measurements themselves. That means ensuring that the instrumented data are reliable, consistent and comparable across sites and over time. Kim Nitschke, NEON Instrumentation Group Manager, explains why quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) are central to NEON’s value, how instrument systems are maintained at a continental scale, and what it takes to build confidence in ecological data from the field to the data portal.
