A message from Dr. Paula Mabee Chief Scientist and Observatory Director

Greetings,

I recently had the pleasure of joining members of the Association of Ecosystem Research Centers (AERC) and other NEON Battelle staff at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) for a jointly organized workshop on translational communication. The workshop enabled attendees to dive deeply into how to have effective and impactful discussions about data with decision makers and stakeholders. We were all energized by the conversations at the workshop and thankful to AERC and SREL for providing a platform for these important conversations. If you are using NEON data, samples, or infrastructure in your work, we encourage you to continue to share your research or how you use NEON with us. NEON is a network of incredible work by persons like yourself, and we are continually inspired by the applications of NEON data, samples, and resources. Please note the new NSF solicitation for Postdoctoral Research Followships in Biology (PRFB). If you would like NEON's support through the provision of a technical expert or co-mentor, please reach out to us!

One key aspect of NEON that is unique and pushing forward new innovations in science is the NEON Biorepository. In the last newsletter, I noted how providing capacity for this expanding biological and environmental sample archive is a priority for NEON. The Biorepository offers many opportunities for discovery and advancement in soil science, biodiversity, AI imaging and more. In this newsletter, learn more from Dr. Hojun Song, Principal Investigator for the NEON Biorepository, view current research enabled by NEON samples and specimens, and explore resources to support your own use of the NEON Biorepository.

I also want to draw attention to our newly updated website. With the NEON Biorepository portal now fully integrated into the neonscience.org website, you can access NEON data, samples and specimens, and resources all in one place. The website update also includes streamlined browsing and a simplified menu. On the website, you will find our newly released 2026 Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) flight campaign schedule. Next month, the NEON AOP will begin preparing for a robust AOP campaign.

NEON’s AOP is also currently using models derived from NEON's hyperspectral and foliar chemistry data to develop a percent canopy nitrogen content data product (DP3.30018.002). Maps of foliar nitrogen concentrations for select sites are available for download on the NEON Data Portal. We would value your feedback before the data product is provided for all NEON terrestrial sites. Read the recent Data Notification to learn more.

Sincerely,

Paula Mabee,
Chief Scientist and Observatory Director at NEON, Battelle

A Conversation with Dr. Hojun Song

An entomologist and longtime leader of natural history collections, Dr. Hojun Song brings a perspective grounded in long-term biodiversity research and the scientific value of well-documented physical specimens to his role as the Principal Investigator of the NEON Biorepository. Thousands of biological and physical samples are collected every year from NEON field sites and housed at the NEON Biorepository at Arizona State University. In this conversation, Song reflects on what makes the NEON Biorepository unique, the exciting expansion underway, and why long-term investment in this resource is essential for understanding ecological change.
